The checklist covers six key areas
1. Project and connection context
A substation cannot be scoped correctly without understanding the project around it.
The checklist helps verify whether project technology, installed capacity, connection point, grid voltage, site boundaries, connection route and development stage are sufficiently clear.
This is important because the substation scope for a solar PV plant, wind farm, BESS project or hybrid asset may differ significantly.
2. Voltage level and architecture
Voltage level drives equipment, layout, clearances, protection requirements, civil works and cost.
The checklist helps identify whether the project requires MV, HV or EHV interfaces, whether step-up transformation is needed, whether the connection is radial or looped, and whether the architecture is still uncertain.
A change in voltage level or architecture can materially change the substation scope.
3. Transformers and main equipment
Transformers are often one of the largest and most critical items in a substation.
The checklist helps review whether transformer number, capacity, voltage ratio, redundancy, cooling, losses, spare philosophy and delivery constraints have been considered.
It also helps identify whether the main equipment list is defined enough to support preliminary sizing and cost estimation.
4. Switchgear, protection and metering
A substation must satisfy technical, operational and grid interface requirements.
The checklist helps review switchgear, bays, circuit breakers, disconnectors, protection relays, metering systems, control panels and auxiliary systems.
Missing assumptions in this area can create cost, compliance or design-review issues later.
5. Civil works and site requirements
Substation scope is not only electrical.
The checklist helps identify whether foundations, control building, access roads, drainage, fencing, grounding, cable trenches, fire safety, lighting, security and land availability have been considered.
Civil works can become a significant cost driver, especially when site constraints are underestimated.
6. Grid operator and interface requirements
The substation must align with grid operator requirements and project interfaces.
