Global Energy Mix in 2025
In the first half of 2025, global electricity generation was distributed as follows: renewable energy sources (mainly hydropower, solar, and wind) accounted for 34% of total generation, surpassing coal (33%) for the first time in history. The remaining share was divided among natural gas (~23%), nuclear power (~9%), and other fossil fuels such as oil and petroleum products (1%).
Growth in the power sector was driven primarily by record levels of new wind and solar installations, enabling low-emission sources (renewables + nuclear) to meet nearly all of the increase in electricity demand.
